Middle Years Program

A connected approach to learning
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a challenging framework that connects student learning to the real world. At VIS, our MYP curriculum provides a broad and balanced education for students in Grades 6 through 10.
Students in the MYP engage in authentic learning experiences grounded in internationally designed standards. Our learners build and apply new understandings in a variety of contexts, moving beyond theory to hands-on application.

Building skills, fostering values
At Vientiane International School, our Middle Years Programme (MYP) is designed to do more than just build knowledge—it's about developing the whole student. Our authentic learning experiences are driven by our core values, empowering students to thrive in a complex world.
Learning is based on conceptual understanding and inquiry that allows students to apply what they are learning to real world contexts. Students develop Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills around communication, collaboration, research and self-management that are transferable in a range of environments that universities and employers are looking for today. This combination of concept based learning, inquiry and focus on skills ensures that VIS students are resilient, adaptable, independent and innovative as they prepare for an ever changing world.
This robust learning takes place within a kind, caring, and inclusive community, founded on the values of respect and courage. Our beautiful campus provides the perfect setting for students to find balance between academics, co-curricular activities, and personal well-being. Whether they're playing sports, creating art, or simply relaxing with friends, our students have the space to grow.
A few samples of authentic learning experiences
-
Individuals & Societies In Grade 9 (MYP 4), students examine the concept of sustainability in relation to tourism and systems thinking. They transfer this learning to an Experiential Learning Trip in Luang Prabang and surrounding areas by creating a photo essay to document aspects of sustainability on their trip.
-
Theatre: In Grades 7 and 8 (MYP 2 and 3), students engage in improvisational and exploratory activities that are designed to help them embrace risk and leadership roles. Students build trust and empathy to strengthen their self-confidence on stage and their collaborative partnerships off stage
